How Do You Make Visual Information Understandable Without Sight?
A chart, gesture, game objective or line of on-screen text may carry the point of a video. If the audio never conveys it, consider another way to make that meaning available.
Find meaning that exists only on screen
Watch or read the plan without the picture. Would the viewer know what a chart concluded, which button the tutorial uses, why a game objective changed or what a silent title says? Focus on what matters to the video's purpose, not every visual detail. A scenic shot can remain scenic; a visual joke may need carefully timed context rather than a mechanical list. Identify the points where a viewer who cannot see the frame would otherwise have to guess.
Use the main audio when it fits
In a tutorial or explanation, describe the result as you show it: say the chart's takeaway, the control's name or the action that matters. This can make the primary piece clearer for many viewers and avoid a separate track. Keep descriptions natural and leave room for the video's own voice. For a story, comedy or music performance, talking over every moment may damage the work; a separate described version or descriptive transcript may be the better form.
Choose a genuine alternative when needed
W3C describes integrated narration, a separate described version and supported description tracks as different approaches. The useful choice depends on the content and the actual player. A descriptive transcript can combine spoken words, meaningful sounds and essential visual information in text, but text alone does not provide an audio path for every viewer. Check current hosting support rather than promising a feature that may not exist on the destination.
Test understanding without flattening the art
Ask someone unfamiliar with the piece what they understand from audio alone or from the descriptive alternative. Revise only the missing essential information. A documentary's archival image, dense game UI, dance gesture and cinematic reveal require different timing and language. Make the effort proportionate to the piece and available capacity, then verify the final version. Captions still serve speech and meaningful sound; the transcript guide owns when a separate text version adds value.
Sources and limits
Description needs depend on the content, player and any applicable formal standard. This page gives an editorial method, not a universal legal compliance claim.
