Why Do Viewers Swipe Away from Your Shorts?
A swipe tells you that someone moved on. It does not tell you why, or whether the Short was bad.
Check what the swipe measure actually shows
In YouTube Studio, look at the Short's stayed-to-watch and engaged-view measures where available. Current YouTube guidance counts views from playback starts across formats; for Shorts, engaged views describe people who continued beyond the initial seconds, excluding loops. A large view total and substantial swiping can therefore coexist. Read the current label, date range and sample before concluding that people rejected the whole idea.
Compare this Short with a few Shorts of similar purpose and age, not a long-form episode. With little exposure, a handful of choices can move the percentage sharply. If the report is still processing or missing, there is no reliable pattern to diagnose yet. CQ071 explains the measures in more detail.
Watch the opening without a formula
Play the Short as a stranger would meet it in the feed, including on a small muted screen. Can someone tell what kind of moment this is? Is essential text legible? Is the sound clear when sound matters? Does the first image invite the actual payoff, or promise a different piece? A sketch might need a deliberate setup; a music performance may begin quietly; a game clip may need one beat of stakes. None requires a universal first-second trick.
Other explanations remain possible: the feed reached people seeking something else, the topic drew a narrower audience, or an ordinary viewer simply moved on. A swipe does not prove the edit, creator or character was at fault. Watch the complete Short as well; a sharper opening that misrepresents the payoff would be a worse invitation.
Choose one small next test
Write the observation, two plausible explanations and one reversible decision. For example: the premise appears only after an unreadable caption; viewers may not understand it, but they may also be a different audience; try a clearer caption in a future Short with a similar purpose. Keep the joke, music or atmosphere if that is the point of the work.
Do not delete and reupload by default or convert every idea into the same fast template. If the evidence is thin, save the note and make the next Short you actually want to make. Review the response later without treating a single swipe rate as a verdict.
