How Do You Check Text Contrast in a Video?
Text that looks clear in an editor can disappear against the next frame or on a phone. Test the actual sequence, not only its best-looking still.
Test the whole sequence, not one attractive frame
Play each essential word over the footage it will actually cover. A light word may be clear against a dark wall and vanish a second later against the sky. Pause at the brightest, darkest and busiest moments; then watch at normal speed on a phone-sized screen. Ask whether someone has enough time to read before the text moves or disappears. Text duration, size, position and a crop for another format can matter as much as the colour choice.
Give important words a stable surface
If a name, instruction, number or chart label is hard to read, move it to a calmer part of the frame, add a stable backing shape, change the shot, hold it longer or convey the same information in speech or nearby text. Do not rely only on colour to distinguish categories. For captions, the existing placement guide also checks speaker meaning and obstruction. Decorative titles may have different creative latitude, but viewers should not have to guess at essential information.
Use contrast standards in their proper scope
W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) contrast criteria apply to text and images of text in a web-content context and measure against the background as rendered in normal use. W3C also documents failure when text over an image lacks sufficient contrast. A moving video has many backgrounds; one sampled ratio cannot prove every frame works. If you are working to a formal standard, use its exact criterion, size exceptions and a suitable measurement method rather than borrowing a single number as a universal video rule.
Protect the intended look and the viewer's path
Darkness, motion and stylised typography can serve a story. The useful question is whether a viewer can obtain the meaning the piece depends on. A cinematic moment may keep its shadow while a crucial line moves to narration or a descriptive text version. A game overlay may need a more stable label; a fast Short may need fewer words. Check final playback after export, including captions or platform UI that might cover the text.
Sources and limits
WCAG is a scoped web standard, not a one-number certificate for every video frame or a universal legal conclusion. Verify the applicable formal criterion when one is required.
